EXPERTISE

Research & development

Investigate material and design options against a defined technical question.

A PRACTICAL STARTING POINT

Connect the process to the purpose.

Use a clear hypothesis, representative samples and measurable acceptance criteria. Research results should be tied to the actual application conditions.

Questions to bring to the conversation

  • What is the application, and which requirements are essential?
  • How will the finished component be manufactured and assembled?
  • Which conditions should be represented in testing?
  • What happens at the end of the useful service life?

Any performance, food-contact or environmental claim needs evidence for the specific grade and application. Agree the validation and documentation requirements before selecting a final design.

Choose a focused question

Examples include replacing a heavier part, selecting a specialty foam, improving recovery or testing an alternative feedstock. Define how the result will be judged and which application conditions must be represented.

Combine physical and digital tools

Simulation, dimensional scanning and suitable prototypes can compare concepts efficiently. Material data and the prototype method should match the behaviour under investigation.

Assess environmental options

Traceability, actual material consumption, reuse assumptions and recovery routes provide the basis for a useful comparison. Environmental calculations require a stated boundary and reliable inputs.
